Peanut allergies call for something different - SunButter Sunflower Spread [Review & Giveaway]

When raising my five children, peanut butter played a major role in their nutrition. I counted on it for protein boosts and economical, tasty food choices. We used it on crackers, in sandwiches, in icings, in cookies. In lots of good stuff. And it was easy and convenient for the kids, too. Sadly, in today's world there are many who have peanut allergies and cannot avail themselves of this wonder food that was discovered by Carver so many years ago.

But there are alternatives to peanut butter and one that doesn't risk nut allergies is SunButter's Sunflower Spread. This product line is made from Sunflower seeds and closely resembles peanut butter in taste and consistency making it a viable substitute.

I recently tried three of the SunButter product lines and was very pleased with the taste and texture. We ate it on crackers, in jelly and SunButter Spread, sandwiches, in banana/mayonnaise and SunButter Spread sandwiches, and finally in the Three-Ingredient SunButter Cookie recipe. We were not disappointed.

Product information (from SunButter website) -

When we introduced SunButter in 2002, Governor John Hoeven declared, “Wow, SunButter tastes great and it is the future of North Dakota.”  SunButter provided a solution – offering a delicious peanut butter substitute – for families with peanut and tree nut allergies.  Our customers turn to this peanut and tree nut free sunflower spread for safe lunches, snacks and peanut and tree nut free recipes.  And it is not just for families with peanut allergies – SunButter is a healthy treat packed with more nutrition benefits than peanut butter and a delicious roasted sunflower seed taste.

3-Ingredient SunButter Cookie - Ingredients: 1 cup SunButter® (I used Organic), 1 cup sugar (no substitutions), 1 egg. (Note: Recipe did not call for it, but I used 1 tsp. of vanilla.) With wire wisk, whip together sugar and egg. Stir in SunButter Spread. Roll tablespoon of dough into ball. Press grid into top of cookie with fork. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Bake 350 for 10 minutes.

  1. I found 2 new recipes. SunButter Sea Salt Brownies, and they sound amazing. Also SunButter Protein Bars, and they look good too. My son prefers this over regular peanut butter so I am quite familiar with it.

  2. I learned that "SunButter has just as much protein as the leading brand of peanut butter, but with one-third less saturated fat, absolutely no trans fats, less sodium, and less sugar." I also learned that SunButter is made in the U.S. which is great because I always like to buy things made in the USA.

  3. This is absolutely peanut free (which is great for people who are allergic) & have found some great recipes! And I also learned how nutritious, delicious and packed with protein it is!

  4. I learned that Peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, fish, shellfish, and soy account for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions in the U.S. This is important to know because I have a very allergic family. I also learned that SunButter is made without any of these ingredients and is free from the first seven of the allergens on this list. So my son is able to eat this!

  7. I learned that most Sunbutter (except Creamy) is vegan and Sunbutter comes in On the Go Single Cups. I like the single cup feature for my lunch and I'm trying to eat healthier so vegan is appreciated. kristiedonelson(at)gmail(dot)com Thank you.

  9. I didn't know there were SO many flavors and the health benefits are great! I thought there was really only one type of sunbutter and as much as I like all spreads, they get boring when there's not options - my husband hates peanut butter and only eats nut butters which now I can join him because of the nice selection to choose from and...without the same guilt as I have eating peanut butter

  10. I learned this from visiting their site; Although nearly any food is capable of causing an allergic reaction, only eight foods account for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions in the U.S. These foods are:

    Peanuts
    Tree Nuts
    Milk
    Eggs
    Wheat
    Fish
    Shellfish
    Soy

  11. I learn they have no sugar added and organic sun butter. I love sunbutter! Our daughter is allergic to peanuts, we use this and I think it tastes a lot like peanut butter.

  12. I learned that one serving of SunButter provides more vitamin E, twice as much fiber and zinc, and nearly triple the iron than is provided by one serving of the leading peanut butter. I also learned that they are in the process of implementing new roasting equipment exclusively for sunflower, so that they can be absolutely soy-free. I love sunflower seeds and am very eager to try these products out. Plus, sunbutter cups = win/win!

  13. Such good answers! Love what you've all learned. You've actually given me some food for thought (pun definitely intended). My husband had a SunButter Spread & Pumpkin Butter sandwich for lunch today. Yummy!

  14. I learned that SunButter Sunflower Butter is free from peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, gluten, and sesame. Also that SunButter is made in the U.S. I find this interesting because I didn't know about this product and would like to get some for my grandson who is allergic to peanuts.
