BLACK HISTORY MONTH: THE STORY OF ROSA PARKS by Patricia A. Pingry & THE STORY OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. by Johnny Ray Moore [Review & Giveaway]

Introductory thoughts: The concept of biographic books for the very young is somewhat new in the genre of picture books. True, more detailed picture books have done this in past years, but to introduce individuals of fame to the "board book" crowd (think, preschoolers ages 1 to 5), stretches the imagination of authors, illustrators, and publishers. Nevertheless, we're looking at two well-known people who influenced greatly the lives of black people in America.

The Story of Rosa Parks

My thoughts: Though this is a small board book, the text and understanding would preclude it's being appropriate for preschoolers. I can see letting first and third graders read it, though they might be a bit put off with a board book.

This little biography shows Rosa Parks disobeying the law about riding the bus. It is hard for people today to understand these laws. Her actions make me think a bit of the defiance of the Patriots of the Boston Tea Party when they defied the British and tossed the tea into the sea.

The illustrations are drawings and are a bit on the "dark" side until the page where the ruling allowing people to ride the bus as they wish, and then it seems flooded with light.

About the book: This little book of only about 200 words introduces Rosa Parks, called the “mother of the civil rights movement.” Here is the story of her courageous decision to remain on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, an action that resulted in arrest and, ultimately, a victory for civil rights. The rich oil paintings by artist Steven Walker contribute to the tension of the moment and the understanding of Rosa Parks. A perfect way for the family to honor Black History Month.

The Story of Martin Luther King Jr.

My thoughts: This small board book takes the reader through the life of Martin Luther King Jr. as a boy and into his adult life. Martin's parents are depicted as gentle folk who comply with the laws that restrict where they can go and eat. Martin feels anger and his parents help him deal with it. As he grows into adult life, he trains for the ministry and begins to influence large crowds of people.

Martin is shown as a happy child except for the areas in which he faced discrimination. Martin appears to be a child of a prosperous, well educated black family with his mother a teacher and his father a preacher. But it also shows that Martin experienced discrimination.

I think the book is beautifully done in lively detail and softened colors with well written text that doesn't overcome the young listener. I think age appropriateness would be in the first through third grade range and not necessarily for preschoolers.

About the book: This little book tells the story of Martin Luther King Jr. in a way that even very young children will understand. This simple but accurate account of his life begins with King’s childhood, making it easy for little ones to relate to his story. Children will learn that he excelled in school, became a minister, and worked to end segregation in America. This book, with only about 200 words accompanied by delicate watercolors, is a great way for parents to begin to teach their children about this inspirational historical figure.

Freddie Ramos Rules New York (Zapato Power #6) by Jacqueline Jules & illustratrated by Miguel Benítez [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN13: 9780807594971
Hardcover - $14.99
Albert Whitman & Co. Pub.
My thoughts: This is my first exposure to Freddie Ramos and his wonderful shoes. This early chapter book has just the amount of text in the vernacular that will engage the young reader, especially boys, and a sprinkling of pen drawings.

I love the positive attitude portrayed in the character of Freddie Ramos and his desire to be helpful. But this is not an overtly sweet, do good to others book. No, this is a fun book about a young boy who perceives he has super powers from the wonderful wristband (previously given to him by his friend, Mr. Vaslov) and his Zapato shoes.

If you've every truly watched a small child when they have a brand new pair of colorful sneakers, especially those with flashing lights, you know the personality lift the shoes seem to impart. Well, Mr. Vaslov has previously given Freddie a pair of purple Zapatos and now they are too small. Almost magically, Mr. Vaslov brings a new pair to Freddie just before Freddie and his mother leave for a trip to New York.

His adventures in New York with his "superpowers" are fun to read. The story flows smoothly. There is a tiny sprinkling of Spanish words or phrases which enriches the reading. Gently the words are re-said in English in the flow of the text without appearing to be "teachy."

I'd love to see the entire set of these positive, well done books in elementary libraries across the country.

About the book: Freddie and his mom are visiting Uncle Jorge in New York City! Just before they leave, Mr. Vaslov gives Freddie a new pair of zapatos to replace the ones that were getting too small. But Freddie worries if his new zapatos will work as well as his old ones. Will Freddie be able to save the day when Uncle Jorge misplaces an engagement ring in the middle of a New York City traffic jam?

I’M GOING TO GIVE YOU A BEAR HUG by Caroline B. Cooney [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: This is giggly, tug-at-your-heart, tickle-your-funny-bone charming. There is just so much fun and, yes, sweetness blooming on each and every page.

Just how many different kinds of hugs are there? Bear hug? Well, it would be crushing, big, furry, warm. But what about all those other hugs?

I just love Cooney's lyrical text as she hugs her way through the cornucopia of hugs ....
I'm going to give you a cat hug. A simple purr, stroke my fur, don't do more than that hug.
....a sheep hug. A lamb's wool, blanketful, don't make a peep hug.
The illustrations by Tim Warnes are sweetness and charm rollicking with fun and gentlenesss. Softly colored but bright enough to engage the attention of the young child. A child can picture him or herself amidst all this fun.

And as it began.... "way beyond compare hug," it ends with a bear hug that is "A just right turn off the light, sleep tight, say your prayers and kiss good night, way beyond compare hug."

I highly recommend this book.

About the book: I’m Going to Give You a Bear Hug!, written by bestselling author Caroline B. Cooney, is a playful and comforting bedtime book that imagines all the wonderful ways a child might give and receive a hug.

Whether it’s a big bear, gasp for air, knock over a chair hug or a wet and drippy, slimy, slippy fish hug, children will giggle their way through all the imaginative examples. Cooney’s sweet and simple rhymes encourage playful interaction between parent and child and ultimately help them wind down before they snuggle into bed and drift off to sleep.

Never Forget (Beacons of Hope Series) by Jody Hedlund

My thoughts: I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the books in the Beacons of Hope series about keepers of lighthouses in the early years of our country. These men, and women, have lived strong, fearless lives on the brink of disaster as they maintain the lights that keep those on the seas safe. True, these are works of fiction, but they are based on true encounters, events, and personages.

In Never Forget the storm lashed yacht of wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop is in a perilous situation and Nathaniel is washed overboard while struggling to keep it afloat. He is found unconscious by Abbie, the young lady who helps her aged and dementia afflicted grandpa take care of the lighthouse. She takes him back to the cottage and nurses him back to consciousness though his memory is gone because of a blow to his head.

What follows is a sweet tale where Abbie tries to manage the lighthouse and her grandpa's condition and keep the superintendent of lighthouses from firing them from their position. The characters have situations and past decisions in their lives that really clutter their ability to move forward but they find that regardless of their past actions, there is hope in Christ and new beginnings.

The title is apt given the sweet grandpa's dementia and how it affects those around him and also the amnesia Nathaniel endures from his accident. But it is also true that we should never forget the hope that awaits us in Christ.

About the book: Rose Island Lighthouse, Rhode Island - June 1880

Will she betray his trust to stay on the island she loves?

Abbie Watson is content to spend her days clamming, crabbing, and tending Rose Island Lighthouse. Her grandpa is the head light keeper, but his senility may lead to their eviction. Since leaving the island would kill her beloved Gramps, Abbie will do anything to keep him in the one place he knows and loves.

Wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop III’s wild living has gained him a reputation as the ‘bad boy’ among the elite social circles of Newport. After a blow to the head in a yachting accident washes him up on Rose Island, Nathaniel has no memories of his past.

Abbie tends the wounded stranger in her home only to realize he assumes they’re married. Although she knows she needs to correct Nathaniel’s mistake, his presence calms Gramps and provides a way to prevent eviction from the lighthouse.

The longer the charade continues, the harder it gets for Abbie to tell Nathaniel the truth, more so as she begins to fall in love. Everyone she’s ever loved has abandoned her. Will Nathaniel leave her too, once he discovers he’s not really her husband?

3 Days to Beautiful Skin with Simple 2-Step Program from Élan Rose™

After using these two Élan Rose™ products in the prescribed manner for a few days, I haven't noticed a drastic change in my facial skin. I am thinking these products are best used earlier in life to achieve prevention from the appearances of aging on one's skin. However, I have high hopes that continued use will help to tighten and soften my skin achieving a level of improvement perhaps not available with other products.

This is a simple two--step program using only the two products that Élan Rose™ provides. Noteably, I find the ingredient list of these two distinctly different from that of other similar products. I have never used anythinng with Gorgonian Extract or Chestnut Extract and I'm not familiar with 7-dehydrocholesterol. These are definitely products to pay attention to for this product's effectiveness and that of future items that show up on the market.

After cleansing my face in the evening, I applied the night serum. Sometimes it has left a slight stinging sensation which quickly goes away. The "milky" serum goes on easily and absorbs quckly. A small amount goes a long way.

The next morning I splash water over my face, patting it dry. Then I apply the Hello Sunshine!™ day cream which has a strong SPF 30 to protect from the effects of the Sun. I have been using a high end department store foundation that also has a SPF 30 so this really "double-downs" on protection.

One thing to keep in mind with the Hello Sunshine! day cream is that it shouldn't be used at night. Products with SPF in them are best not used overnight.

The Élan Rose™ website has a plethora of information about the inception of this new product that has just been on the market for a couple of years. Read the information and find out that the developers of Élan Rose™ are highly qualified and experienced.

Wake-Up Beautiful! NIGHT SERUM

The best time for repair and healing is at night when you sleep, and the skin is free from environmental factors such as sunlight and stress. Considered best anti-aging night cream. Wake Up Beautiful! Night Serum works overnight to:
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles - wrinkle reducing serum
  • Improve luminosity and elasticity
  • Visibly strengthen and smooth skin

Active Ingredients:

  • Vitamin B3 for DNA repair and energy production
  • Gorgonian Extract for soothing and healing
  • Melatonin for strengthening
  • Chestnut Extract for acid-free natural exfoliation

Hello Sunshine! DAY CREAM BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 30

The single worst enemy of the skin is solar radiation. UV damages the skin's DNA, impairs its immune system, hinders energy production. This molecular damage becomes visible because it produces irritations, redness and dullness. Hello Sunshine! SPF 30 Day Cream is a luxurious hydrating day cream providing Broad Spectrum SPF 30 protection that:
  • Protects the skin against UV damage
  • When properly applied, protects against skin aging and skin cancer
  • FDA approved UVB and UVA sunscreens

Active Ingredients:

  • Vitamin B3 for DNA repair and energy production
  • Gorgonian Extract for soothing and healing
  • Vitamin E to protect the structure of the epidermis
  • 7-dehydrocholesterol to activate the endogenous anti-stress system

InstaNatural Rose Water Hydration with a quick mist

Having never used a rose water, I was curious about its purpose and how to incorporate it into my daily regime. Being provided an opportunity to evaluate the InstaNatural Rose Water product, I agreed to the offer. First of all, just what is Rose Water?.....
About ROSA DAMASCENA (ROSE) FLOWER WATER: Rosa Damascena Flower Water is an aqueous solution of the steam distillate obtained from the flowers of Rosa damascena. source
Simply spritz a bit over face or body for instant hydration that smells really nice.
Or you can spritz/saturate a cottonball and use as a toner to effectively remove last traces of makeup.
This is a very pleasant, softly scented water that seems intended to help cleanse the skin of residual makeup and skin cells after washing. It is also a product that can be misted onto the skin and hair to hydrate at any time.  It can also be used to set makeup after applying one's makeup. I used it in each of these manners and it feels quite nice and is certainly pleasant to use.

Directions also suggest using a couple ounces in one's bath which I tried and don't feel the end result merits its use for that purpose.

Do I recommend the InstaNatural Rose Water? I'd say it makes a nice non-drying toner to use after washing one's face. It is also a very pleasant hydrating mist.

Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist presented by Focus on the Family Radio Theatre

Review: Focus on the Family Radio Theatre has produced another masterpiece in their powerful retelling of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.  The cast will have you mesmerized in moments as you listen to this heart-wrenching tale set in 19th century England.  Dickens wrote of very difficult times, and he shines a powerful light on both evil and redemption.  These themes are just as timely today as they were when written, and this radio theatre production of the story of Oliver will grip your heart and mind.  Due to the nature of life on the streets in 19th century London, parents should take note that this production is recommended for ages 12 and up. As you get to know Oliver and the people surrounding him, you will be entertained by this masterful story, but you will also be challenged to look at the Olivers of today and how you can make a difference in the modern world.  (rev. Our Country's Presidents: A Complete Encyclopedia of the U.S. Presidency (January 2017 Edition, National Geographic) by Ann Bausum

ISBN: 9781426326851
Hardcover
My thoughts: This is an amazing book! Designed to present each of the 43 individuals who have been elected to serve as America's President, it far surpasses a book of mini-biographies of people. It is a compilation of factual information relating to the Office of President of the United States of America, how the Presidency came to be, how the Electoral College works, voting rights, etc.

Sequenced chronologically, the reader can follow through how the country developed under the leadership of each of these Presidents. From our Country's inception and formative leadership, through years of discovery and expansion and on into the atomic age, America has grown guided by our governing principals and leaders who strove for America's best

The January 2017 edition of Our Country's Presidents: A Complete Encyclopedia of the U.S. Presidency was designed for the inclusion of the most recently elected President, Donald Trump, and released just days prior to his inauguration.

Packed with lots of pictures that aid in understanding and focus on the points being addressed on each page, the book is a storehouse of information that children and adults alike will pour over for many hours returning to the book time and time again. Designed for ages 10 and up, I can actually see it being used also with younger children as one explains to them the election process and the inauguration of a new president.

What an educational treasure this book is with it's short biographies of each President and other facts relative to the presidency. I highly recommend this for every school and public library, home libraries, and homeschool libraries.

About the book: National Geographic presents the 43 individuals who have led the U.S., plus America's newest commander-in-chief, in this up-to-date, authoritative, and lavishly illustrated family, school, and library reference. It features comprehensive profiles of the 43 former presidents along with timelines and descriptions of crucial events during their terms. Information about the 2016 president-elect is also included.

Thematic spreads cover a variety of topics from the history of voting rights to writing a presidential letter. Full-page portraits, famous quotes, and fascinating facts help kids get to know each leader. This new volume is a fascinating read and excellent reference for students and kids of all ages.

Nearly two-dozen thematic spreads introduce concepts related to elections,
the presidency, and the First Family. (image & caption from AnnBausum.com)

The Amish Princess (The Paradise Chronicles #2) by Patrick E. Craig [Review & Giveaway]

This book is not to be missed!
My thoughts: I thoroughly expected an expertly crafted story by Patrick E. Craig since I have found his previous works to reveal his prodigious skills as a word smith. I did not expect such a powerful story that plowed deep into the heart and mind of frontiers people as well as the Indians whose land and way of life was being stolen.

The spirituality of this book encompasses the naturalist belief of tribal Indians and the Christian faith of Amish and Moravian Christians as they each confronted life and their own faith in the midst of horrific events.

There is a great deal of intensity and terrible tragedy powerfully described by Craig's pen as the struggle and battle to own the land is waged.

And who is the Amish Princess? And such is quite a misnomer as the Amish are, traditionally, quite a self-effacing people who would shy away from claiming to be Princess or highly elevated or esteemed. The Amish Princess is the daughter of a mighty Indian chief whose grandmother was a member of the French Aristocracy who was captured by the Indians many years prior to the story's beginnings. She is beautiful, fair skinned (for an Indian), and much beloved. And in the story she comes to believe the Christian faith at the leading of an Amish young man who has been captured by the Indians.

Her story is moving and powerful, but it is not the only story in the book. Readers will find the multiple story lines quite interesting, compelling, and riveting. This is a book not to be missed.

About the book: Opahtuhwe, the White Deer, is the beautiful daughter of Wingenund, the most powerful chief of the Delaware tribe. She is revered by her people–a true Indian princess. Everything changes when the murderous Delaware renegade known as Scar brings three Amish prisoners to the Delaware camp. Jonathan and Joshua Hershberger are twin brothers that Scar has determined to adopt and teach the Indian way. The third prisoner is Jonas Hershberger, their father, who has been made a slave because he would not defend his family. White Deer is drawn to Jonathan but his hatred of the Indians makes him push her away. Joshua's gentle heart and steadfast refusal to abandon the Amish faith lead White Deer to a life-changing decision and rejection by her people. In the end, White Deer must choose between the ways of her people and her new-found faith. And complicating it all is her love for the man who can only hate her.

About the author: Best-selling Author Patrick E. Craig is a lifelong writer and musician who left a successful career in the music industry after two albums on Warner Brothers Records and years of live performances in one of San Francisco's most popular music groups to follow Christ in 1984. He spent the next twenty-six years as a worship leader, seminar speaker and pastor in churches, retreats, seminars and conferences in the Western United States. In 2013 Harvest House published the first of his Apple Creak Dreams series, A Quilt For Jenna, followed by The Road Home and Jenny's Choice. A Quilt For Jenna recently moved into the #1 bestseller in Amish Fiction on Amazon. His new book, The Amish Heiress is the first in his new series, The Paradise Chronicles.

InstaNatural™ Vitamin C Moisturizer with Niacinamide

#Instanatural
My thoughts: This Vitamin C moisturizer from InstaNatural™ surprised me with the inclusion of Niacinamide. Curious as the the use of  Vitamin B3 in a topical skin care product, I did a bit of internet cruising. I found that it is considered a really good anti-aging ingredient that helps with skin clarification, stabilization of skin's outer layer, and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Wow!

When I used it, I found that a very small amount goes a long way to thoroughly cover the face and neck. It readily absorbs into the skin. I help it along by massaging my face in an upward, rotating manner to help it absorb and sink into the skin. After application, I noticed a slight stinging which is actually a refreshing feeling.

What I've done for the past week or so is to use the InstaNatural Age Defying Skin Clearing Serum (click here to see my review) in the evening and then applying the InstaNatural™ Vitamin C Moisturizer after the serum absorbs. I reapply the moisturizer in the morning prior to applying any makeup. I have found that my skin feels really soft using this moisturizer and can recommend it.

The Travel Twins and the Lost Secret of the Vikings (Kare Kids Adventures #4) by Charles A. Salter [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: The Kare Kids adventure is fast moving and exciting. The story is packed with bits of information about Norway and the historic crystal considered to be a navigational tool of the Vikings prior to the invention of the magnetic compass.

I found the story a quick read and filled with conversations and excitement that would grip the adventure-seeking reader. Charles A. Salter's series of The Travel Twins (The Kare Kids Adventures) is a good series.

My Concerns: This story is about a 12 year old set of twins on an adventure to foil a theft of a mysterious object. Before undertaking it, they have a conversation with their uncle...... "Children, I don't think your parents would approve your your darting off on your own like this." To which they replied....  "Just give us 24 hours before you tell them. O.K.?" Somehow, parents of children reading this story will need to strongly tell them that this is fiction and that 12 year olds simply do not go off on their own like this or engage in some of the antics this set of twins experiences.

About the Book: Twelve year old twins Josh and Hannah travel from the USA to visit their Uncle Olaf in Norway. Olaf runs the Museum of Norse Antiquities in Oslo, and the museum's greatest treasure-the Viking chieftain Leif Erikson's fabled Sunstone-is stolen. Hot on the trail of the suspected thief, the twins ride on a dizzyingly high train through the Scandes Mountains to Norway's largest fjord, a deep waterway which connects directly to the North Sea. While spying on the suspect's suspicious behavior, the twins are suddenly kidnapped on the train! They elude their captors by breaking free, sneaking across the top of the train as it chugs through a tunnel, and tricking the kidnappers. Then they learn the thief's true motivation: to use the Sunstone to interpret the coded Undredal Runes so as to re-create the Viking super-warriors known as Berserkers.

Can the twins defeat the plot, return the stolen treasure, and save the world from the secret of Viking Berserkers which has been concealed for a thousand years?

Lords Prayer (Words of Hope and Happiness) with commentary by Rick Warren, illustrated by Richard Jesse Watson

ISBN: 9780310757559
Hardcover $16.99
ZonderKidz ~ Ages 4-8
My thoughts: This is an absolutely lovely book that can take the child at varying ages through learning and understanding The Lord's Prayer. There are three elements to the text in this book. First and foremost is the King James Version of The Lord's Prayer as it is presented line by line on each two-page spread. The illustrations are bright, beautifully done, and clearly defining the meaning and expression of the prayer lines on that page spread.

Also included in the book is Rick Warren's carefully worded and easy to understand explanation of the prayer line presented on the current page. And then there is a short one sentence prayer to accompany this. Example:

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:" (KJV)
"God helps me to do what is right and good. And he helps me to not do what is wrong. I can ask God for help any time!" (Rick Warren)
(Prayer) "Thank you, God, for protecting me!"

I can see this being used first as a picture book to read and teach The Lord's Prayer to the child. Just read the prayer itself. No explanation. No, nothing else except perhaps what might very naturally be promoted by interest and innate questioning by the child.

Later, begin to read the text by Rick Warren as a "story book" to the child. Perhaps at this point the child will already have learned and will feed back to you The Lord's Prayer.

Then as opportunity arises, incorporate the short prayers into the reading.

Beautiful illustrations! Beautiful and well thought out text to accompany the beautiful prayer that our Lord and Saviour gave us as a pattern.

I highly recommend!

About the book: This iconic prayer is paired with flowing illustrations by award-winning artist Richard Jesse Watson and thoughtful insights by bestselling author Rick Warren, resulting in a book that rejuvenates the familiar prayer for a younger audience. Using poetic scripture from the King James Version, The Lord’s Prayer: Words of Hope and Happiness helps familiarize children with real biblical text while also presenting contemporary illustrations and insightful words that make this beautiful prayer come alive.

God Made You Nose to Toes By Leslie Parrott Published by Zondervan

My thoughts: There have been many "takes" on teaching little ones how God made them. How God made each and every part of them and made them special. In God Made You Nose to Toes the child is carried through the sweet rhymes with a little boy and his pal, the Toucan.

The illustrations are especially colorful and have a sweetness that has a real cuddle-factor. Just like the cuddle-factor that children have. Leslie Parrott takes a little different approach to teaching that the body of the child is designed and made by God. I love this way she says things like....
God placed on the beaches some shells and some sand,
and he gave you five fingers and called it a hand.
You see what she is doing? She is talking about something like the beach, shells, and sand and the image shows a child playing on the beach. Using.... ??? You guessed it, his hand.

God made many sounds that he wants you to hear,
so on each side of your head he planted an ear.

And then the author talks about the ear (well, ears, plural) and that they are placed on each side of the head. So the child is made conscious of the fact that God put his ears on both sides of his head. A great opportunity to teach how this way we can hear sounds that surround us. And the purpose of the ears? Well, because God made all these wonderful and beautiful sounds He wants you to hear.

This board book has a padded cover and is perfect for those little hands that will hold it fast and carry it whither-so-ever they go. I highly recommend it!

About the book: Help little ones understand that God created each part of their bodies so they can enjoy life and everything in it. In this delightful padded cover board book by well-known author and family therapist Leslie Parrott, children can follow along with Toucan––with a great big nose––as he helps them learn God loves each one of them completely.

A Moonbow Night by Laura Frantz

My thoughts: First of all, I was struck by curiosity about the probability of a "Moonbow" (think.... "rainbow" but at night). So as I began reading Laura Frantz's latest frontier story, I did a bit of research - specifically into the Moonbow in the Kentucky area. Fascinating bit of information and, yes, they do exist!

The first pages of A Moonbow Night left me feeling the cold icy sting of a Winter storm in the mountains of Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. As the surveyors trekked through the woods trying to avoid the Indians by being as quiet as possible and not lighting the fire that could warm their feet and cook food that would bring their body temperatures to more normal range, the cold seeped into their very being.

It is 1777 and the surveying party of men was surprised to find three women and a man managing an inn of sorts in an isolated part of the wilderness, but they were delighted to partake of the wonderful food and shelter from the elements after being on the trail so long.

Frantz is a true-to-the-period author as she writes of happenings, people, and the land of early frontier days in the settlement of America. In this story, the British were inciting the Indians against the westward movement of settlers and particularly surveyors. It simply was not a safe land through which to perilously journey.

This is a book of historical Christian fiction that brings the reader a terrific frontier adventure and a sweet romance as it develops between two individuals who have previously experienced great personal loss and who are strong characters.

About the book: After fleeing Virginia, Temperance Tucker and her family established an inn along the Shawnee River. It's a welcome way station for settlers and frontiersmen traveling through the wild Cumberland region of Kentucke--men like Sion Morgan, a Virginia surveyor who arrives at the inn with his crew looking for an experienced guide. When his guide appears, Sion balks. He certainly didn't expect a woman. But it is not long before he must admit that Tempe's skill in the wilderness rivals his own. Still, the tenuous tie they are forming is put to the test as they encounter danger after danger and must rely on each other.

With her signature sweeping style and ability to bring the distant past to vivid life, Laura Frantz beckons readers to join her in a land of Indian ambushes, conflicting loyalties, and a tentative love that meanders like a cool mountain stream.

A Case of Sense by Songju Ma Daemicke and illustrated by Shennen Bersani from Arbordale Publishing [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN: 9781628558531
Paperback $9.99
Hardcover $17.99
Reading level: Mid-Elementary
My thoughts:  While the story narrated in A Case of Sense is a folk tale in numerous cultures, primarily Asian, it is new to the American reader. In it a greedy cook decides he will cook up a way to enrich himself without cost by preparing a variety of dishes that are highly arromatic. Once he does this, he goes about the city knocking on doors and demanding payment from the people because they benefited (according to him) from smelling his food.

They rightly refused to pay him and Fu Wang takes the people to court. Young Ming has observed this and continues to observe the proceedings in court. After listening to the demands (the case) presented by Fu Wang, the judge instructs each of those being sued to remove all the coins from their pockets. He then has them shake and rattle them creating sounds.

His decision is that Fu Wang has now been compensated by the people because he has "heard" the sound of the coins in payment for the "smell" of his food. Quite an interesting concept and a good way to show that the two senses, smell and sound, have no monetary value. At the end of the book, there are several pages for educators, home schoolers, and inquisitive minds to further discover the five (not just two) senses. The story has value on multiple levels - cultural, biological, and perhaps even mathmatical and judical.

About the book: While Ming plays outside one summer day, the smell of delicious food fills the air. It is coming from greedy Fu Wang's house. What is he up to? wonders Ming. To his alarm, Fu Wang demands that all the neighbors pay him for the pleasant smells. When the neighbors refuse, the case goes to court. How will the judge rule in this unusual case and will justice be served? Can Fu Wang make money from the neighbors' sense of smell? A wise judge makes use of another sense to close the case with clever and convincing logic.

Conspiracy of Silence (The Tox Files #1) by Ronie Kendig

ISBN13: 9780764217654
Bethany House Publishing
My thoughts: When you crack the spine of Conspiracy of Silence by Ronie Kendig, you'd best prepare for an enthralling read packed with fast paced action. Having never read a Ronie Kendig book, I wasn't prepared for the detailed action description and the intriguing multi-layered story.

This was a hard-to-put-down book; although when I first looked at my copy, I thought to myself this is going to be a long, strung-out read. I was so surprised that those 400 plus pages just rapidly flipped by with multi-continental locations, a dip into ancient and medieval history involving holy censors and the Codex (early bound Biblical leaves, sheets), and a plague of Biblical proportions.

I can hardly wait to read book two in "The Tox Files" to see just what Cole 'Tox' Russell gets himself involved. I loved the interaction in the team of men that worked with Tox and, of course, the character of Kelsy and her history and current interaction with Tox.

About the book: When an archaeological dig unleashes a centuries-old virus, paramilitary operative Cole ‘Tox’ Russell is forced back into action. With the help of archaeologist Tzivia Khalon and FBI agent Kasey Cortes, Tox searches for answers—and becomes entangled in a web of deception. As the team races to stop a pandemic, a secret society counters their every move.

Green Pants by Kenneth Kraegel from Candlewick Press

Hardcover ISBN: 9780763688400
On Sale March 21st, 2017
About the book: For kids who march to their own drummer — or are especially attached to a comfort object — here is a completely adorable character who wears his singularity in style.

Jameson only ever wears green pants. When he wears green pants, he can do anything. But if he wants to be in his cousin’s wedding, he’s going to have to wear a tuxedo, and that means black pants. It’s an impossible decision: Jameson would love nothing more than to be in his cousin's wedding, but how can he not wear green pants? Will Jameson turn down this big honor, or will he find a way to make everyone happy, including himself? In this pitch-perfect ode to individualism, acclaimed author-illustrator Kenneth Kraegel creates a character readers of all ages can root for — whatever color pants they wear.

My thoughts: Bringing the theme of children's attachment quirks (is that the best word?) to a picture book that seems to be a fun book is a bit different or so it seems to me. At first examination, I didn't care for Kraegel's "Green Pants." However, as I re-read it I began to see how well the parents in the book handled Jameson's attachment quirk by allowing his continued attachment to be his choice or to grow a bit of flexibility and discard his attachment in lieu of something he wants more. To get to that point....

It is quite obvious that Jameson is part of a gentle, loving family.  His uncle and uncle's finance want him to participate in their wedding and his mother gently explains to him about wearing a black tuxedo instead of his green pants. He thinks he can do it, but then his attachment sets in and he is emotionally tied to those green pants.

Given the choice by his mother who doesn't back down he is at a crossroads. Then his uncle's finance speaks to him and he joyfully overcomes his quirky attachment and gladly wears the black tuxedo. The ending is quite cute as he erupts into dancing .... in his green pants.

Salonpas® pain relief can help you keep your resolve to exercise more! [Review & Giveaway]

New year's resolutions to exercise more sometimes need pain relief aids to keep on goal

Summer and all the activity that you engage in during those warm (or hot) days is long past. Winter has arrived and with it the tendency to slow down or actually stop "doing" those things that keep our bodies strong, active, and alive.

After the indulgences of the holidays, our bodies feel sluggish and, yes, perhaps a bit heavier or thicker around the middle. That means we've got to get moving. Get stretching. Get exercising. And doing those things after a few weeks of inactivity can prove to cause bone wearying and muscle aching. And if you've not done those treadmill jaunts or bike rides, lifted or pulled on the weights for awhile, then your body is going to give you a rude awakening. You're going to feel it!

I have found that my first line of defense is heat (or for some, ice) and then applying a topical product. Sometimes a gel, a spray, a cream, and one of the patches. I've found some to help and some to do nothing. But before I pop a pill, I try topical!

Salonpas® has a great assortment of products in types and sizes that will fit many needs. Did you know that..... they have...
The First and Only FDA-Approved OTC Pain Patch. SALONPAS® PAIN RELIEF PATCH is the first and only FDA-Approved OTC topical pain patch for the temporary relief of mild to moderate muscles and joints aches and pains associated with arthritis, sprains, strains, bruises and simple backache.

I really like their 4% Lidocain patch. I've seen prescription lidocain patches used in emergency rooms and prescribed for those with lots of pain, but this is the first I've seen where you can get it right off of the drug store shelf!

The spray can is super good for applying a quick shot to those hard to reach spots and is fast drying. I love that Salonpas® has such a great variety of products and several sizes of patches. If you like "chilling" or "icy" pain relief, they've got it. If you like it "hot," they've got it. If you want small or large patches, it is available. The gel, spray, and patches provide easy to use topical applications that might be just what your aches and pains need.

So get moving! Get busy! Salonpas® is "spot on" for relief. And they are so confident in their product, that they are going to provide one of  Chat With Vera's readers a box of their pain-relieving-goodies.

Fatal Frost (Defenders of Justice #1) by Nancy Mehl - Mehl Ramps Up the Suspense in This Brand-New U.S. Marshals Series [review & giveaway]

Read an Excerpt - click here
My thoughts: Previous books by Nancy Mehl have focused on Mennonite or Amish communities interacting amongst those in secular communities and often laced with a strong element of suspense. In Fatal Frost Mehl steps firmily into the suspense genre aligning her characters in the U.S.Marshal camp and with the world of protection, gang-bashers,  and drug cartels.

I say this is a good fit for Mehl's talents as she takes the reader into the corruption that drugs, murder, and ill-gained money place characters. As the title indicates, the death defying chill of a severe winter storm and the deadly pursuit of evil men takes the reader into the mind, actions, and horrors of a spine chilling suspense read. Frosty indeed!

Character development is excellent and reveals weaknesses and strengths of each of the major players. Corruption in high places as well as low-life gang members run a strong thread of fearful encounters throughout the book. There is, however, a promise of hope as characters share their Christian faith.

As the first book in a series of Defenders of Justice, Fatal Frost has given me a sure-fire appetite for additional "defenders of justice" stories. Thanks Nancy Mehl for a good, Christian read.

About the book: Mercy Brennan followed in her father's footsteps in a law enforcement career, but she has no interest in any other connection to him. A U.S. Marshal in St. Louis, Missouri, she's assigned to a joint task force with the St. Louis PD that puts her back into contact with her father and in the sights of St. Louis's most powerful gang.

When the gang has reason to believe Mercy has possession of some highly sensitive and incriminating information, her boss assigns Mark St. Laurent--a Deputy U.S. Marshal and Mercy's ex-boyfriend--to get her out of town until they can guarantee her safety.

Initially unaware of the danger she's in and uncomfortable working with Mark, Mercy's frustration escalates when she discovers the extent her boss and Mark have been keeping her in the dark. It isn't until a freak ice storm hits, stranding them at a remote location and out of contact with the district office, that the full severity of their situation becomes clear. As the storm worsens, the forces of nature combine with a deadly enemy closing in to put their lives at imminent risk. Can they survive long enough for help to arrive--if help is even coming at all?

If You Were Me and Lived in...Ancient China: The Han Dynasty by Carole P. Roman, illustrated by Mateya Arkova [Review & Giveaway - 10 Winners]

My thoughts: In her new Social Studies series featuring ancient cultures and history, the author expands the amount of information to roughly 70 pages in each book. In her book on Ancient China: The Han Dynasty there are 76 pages of information gently presented to the young child so they can delve into a time and culture that is perhaps quite foreign to them.

Softly illustrated by Mateya Arkova, the pages tell the story of how life was during the Han Dynasty of China. Did you know that only the Emperor could wear yellow? The Emperor also decreed that families raise chickens so they could have them at meals. Also, there was a special nook in the kitchen for the kitchen god.

I previously reviewed the following books in this Time Travel History Series. You can read my reviews here: Renaissance Italy, Ancient Greece, Elizabethan England, The Middle AgesThe American West,

About the book: Travel through time to visit the most interesting civilizations throughout history with author Carole P. Roman in her new series.

Learn what kind of food you might eat in Ancient China, the clothes you wore, what your name could be, and what children in the Han Dynasty did for fun.

If You Were Me and Lived in...does for history what her other award-winning series did for culture. So get on-board this time-travel machine and discover the world through the eyes of a young person just like you.
