Jordyn Redwood begins new series with "Fractured Memory" [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: I read and reviewed Jordyn Redwood's previous three books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Her first release from Love Inspired Suspense publishing is not a disappointment. An individual is thrust into the violence of the world of murder and intrigue and is the victim of the Hangman who has notoriously hung several victims.

Fractured Memory is a fast paced suspense with danger lurking and attempts to stamp out Julia's life at nearly every turn. Julia and Eli, her US Marshal protector, are thrown into a variety of situations where her safety is compromised and her life endangered.

I found Jordyn's medical expertise peeking through in circumstances throughout the book. Julia's profession as an ER nurse is an echo of the author's own experience in the pediatric ER. It is evident that both the protagonist and the author both share a love of the medical profession.

There is a touch of sweet romance blossoming between Julia and Eli but it is not an overpowering factor in the story. Redwood handles this very well and discretely.

I enjoyed Fractured Memory and look forward to more reads from Jordyn Redwood.

About the book: United States marshal Eli Cayne saved Julia Galloway's life once…and he's prepared to do it again. But his task would be easier if she could remember him—or the murderer who almost put her in an early grave and seems to be hunting her once more. To protect Julia from the latest threat against her life, Eli has to consider the possibility that he put an innocent man in jail. Julia has no memories of the serial killer called The Hangman, though, and no reason to trust Eli. But with the killer getting closer, she must work with Eli to confront her past—and the feelings growing between them.

A Beauty Refined (Sapphire Brides) by Tracie Peterson [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts:  An interesting story set in Montana at a resort in an area known for mining precious gem stones - specifically sapphires. The characters are well developed and present a variety of personalities that the reader will either like or immensely dislike. The character I most disliked was Phoebe's father, the German count. He was arrogant, pompous, mean, and absent of any virtues. I believe my most favorite was Phoebe's younger brother. He was absolutely charming, sweet, and filled with boyish appeal.

While Phoebe is accustomed to immense wealth and privilege, she sees value in individuals less entitled than she and finds she can rely on them and trust them. And she finds herself in the precarious position of needing someone in whom she can completely place her trust.

I found the information sprinkled in the story about the mining of sapphires in America and the cutting of the stones to be very interesting. The story has a sweet romance that develops at the end. The Christian focus on faith in all circumstances and the strong faith of Ian Harper, the leading male figure in the story, is well placed in the story and comes across as true to life.

A book to highly recommend and one you can gladly share with any teen, adult, and even grandmother.

About the book: What does it take to reveal the true beauty of a hidden gem?

Phoebe Von Bergen, the daughter of a German count, is excited to visit America for the first time while her father purchases sapphires in Helena, Montana. Little does she know, however, that her father's intentions---both for her and the gemstones---are not what she thinks.

Ian Harper, a lapidary working in Helena, finds the dignified young woman staying at the Broadwater Hotel more than a little intriguing. Yet the more he gets to know her, the more he realizes that her family story is based on a lie---a lie she has no knowledge of. And Ian believes he knows the only path that will lead her to freedom.

Meeting Ian has changed everything for Phoebe, and she begins to consider staying in America, regardless of her father's plans. But she may not be prepared for the unexpected danger that results when her family's deception begins to unravel.

These are a few of my favorite things.....

You've all heard the song about a "few of my favorite things." Well, being challenged by a blogging group to write a few of my very own favorite things, I thought that there were so many - but how can the "many" be the "favorite" thing/s?

Easy. I just love these so that makes them favorite things.....

Clear skies of blue and fluffy white clouds (North Carolina abounds with these). They are one of God's many blessings to mankind.

Lovely trees dressed in the finery of pink blossoms in the Spring of the year. You've seen them - cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, and who knows what other varieties. I just love those lovely trees fluffy with pink blossoms.

Tiny baby hands and wiggly toes. The joy of seeing, touching, and holding a tiny baby and placing their wee little hand in yours. Oh! It just doesn't get much better than that.

Standing in church and singing deeply from my heart with the congregation that wonderful hymn of praise "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty"!!!! Always my heart is drawn to Him with deeply felt awe and worship of His might and power.

Sunrise each morning.

Sunset each evening.

Raindrops refreshing the Earth.

Ocean waves gently lapping the shore or thunderously crashing with the fullness of God's unleashed might.

A smile.

A tear shed in joy. A hug.

Now, what might be a few of your "favorite" things?

The Hunter's Promise: An Abenaki Tale by Joseph Bruchac & illustrated by Bill Farnsworth [Review & Giveaway]

About the book: "Promise to remember me!" was all the beautiful woman had ever said to the hunter. She had appeared from nowhere one day, when he had been lonely during the long winter hunting trip. Isolated in the vast wilderness of the northeast, he would only return to his village in the spring. Except that this year he would not be alone, because she had appeared.

The hunter had quickly fallen in love with the mysterious woman, and together they had become their own little family. But when spring arrived and it was time to return to the village, she disappeared just as suddenly as she had arrived. Would he ever see his love again? The hunter didn't know, but he was sure he would keep his promise and never forget her. That is, until one day the chief's daughter cast a spell on him!

World-renowned storyteller Joseph Bruchac retells this traditional story of love, loyalty, trust, and magic, which can be found in various forms among many of the indigenous nations of the northeast, both Iroquoian and Algonquin. Join him and award-winning illustrator Bill Farnsworth, as they recount this ancient and unique Abenaki tale of keeping a promise to one's family and of the proper relationship of humans to the natural world.

My thoughts:  This is a beautifully illustrated book that brings a retelling of a gripping folk story from the Abenaki Indians to children giving them a glimpse into what Indian life was like hundreds of years ago. The story incorporates real life and fantasy along with a touch of spiritualism.

I found it interesting with an easy flowing text. The beautiful illustrations artistically depict the seasons as a fine painting. The jealousy of the chief's daughter and trickery to have the hunter marry her is life changing. The chief's daughter used of a bird-spirit to wipe the memory of the hunter. Later the deception was revealed and the hunter proved loyal to his first promise.

I think this is an excellent introduction for children into the beliefs, cultures, and lives of Indians and into folktales of indigenous people; and it is an authentic retelling by Joseph Bruchac whose heritage is Abenaki. It is also a wonderful introduction for children to explore the fine art of Bill Farnsworth.

HOLY GROUND video w/ lyrics

DEEP SHADOWS (The Remnant Series - book One) by Vannetta Chapman [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN: 9780736966535
Harvest House Publishers
$14.95 Paperback
A dystopian novel

My thoughts: Vannetta Chapman has again honed her skill as an author and brought forth another engaging read for her avid followers. She has deviated from her tried and true Amish novels into an altogether different contemporary story embracing the frightening possibility of a world gone amok amidst the aftermath and continued horrors of a massive solar flare that wreaks havoc on all things electric.

In Deep Shadows you meet an array of interesting people of all ages and temperaments. And each of them is impacted by this perilous situation. Seniors in the senior home are dying. Banks and gas pumps don't work. Cars don't work. Medicine is in short supply and the possibility of acquiring more virtually non-existent. Food? Can you imagine.

The small town has an emergency plan and immediately begins to implement it. Long term? They must plant "victory gardens" just as was done during WWII. Water? They have at hand a wonderful spring bubbling up from the ground. Many towns don't have that.

Faith is stretched and tested as are folks' nerves and tolerance. And as I read I began to think about "what if" this really should occur. Or what if something akin to this should occur. Are we, am I prepared?
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The characters were well developed and the storyline flowed well. The plausibility of the town's survival plans implementation and how to exist in a world without technology was well worked out and believable.

About the book: All It Takes Is One Night to Plunge the World into Darkness

Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe—until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology.

Shelby Sparks, novelist and single mom, had one goal: to provide for her diabetic son. In the wake of this global disaster, her mission hasn't changed. Only now, medication is a priceless commodity and the future resembles an apocalyptic nightmare.

Max Berkman and Shelby were once sweethearts, but he lost his chance at claiming her love years ago. When the abrupt loss of power ushers him into a leadership role, he rises to the occasion. But his highest priority—to keep Shelby and her son safe—could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby's faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive.

Hometown Tourist - Living & vacationing in North Carolina

Some folks call them "staycations" and the term means "You stay at home. You don't go on a trip. But you have a "vacation." Does that seem dreary and boresome to you? It would to some folks, but it can be made fun.

I've lived in several areas of North Carolina during my life so we're going to take a brief look at what you could do if you lived in these areas of North Carolina.

First - Wilmington -

This is a historical city of the Old South. Actually the history goes back to pre-Revolutionary War era. Wilmington is nestled at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and on the Atlantic Coast. Beaches in the area include: Wrightsville, Carolina, Kure. The Civil War Fort Fisher can be visited and you can see the famous earthen works. There is also a wonderful aquarium there. You can also go aboard the USS North Carolina which is a World War II destroyer.

The "Riverwalk" along the banks of the Cape Fear abbuts to historic buildings that now hold wonderful restaurants, shops, and things of a unique nature. Truly a wonderful place to stroll.

USS North Carolina
You can see restored historical homes, swim in the Atlantic, take a boat ride along the Cape Fear and generally just have a wonderful time.

Then we travel inland to the middle of the state to the Triangle area - includes: Chapel Hill (where I lived), Raleigh, and Durham

There are 3 major universities in these three cities: The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University-Raleigh, and Duke University-Durham. These are beautiful campuses with much to visit and see. There are museums and historic homes to visit. And if you live in the area, there are parks, swimming pools, and events that you can "staycation" at.

So you see, you can stay at home in the comfort of your own home. Pack a picnic. Go swimming. Go for stroll through the park. And do all sorts of things. You see, "I like calling North Carolina home!"

NOTE: Pictures borrowed from online websites promoting Wilmington and North Carolina.

Imagination Time for kiddies and a fun launch of book 3 "Return" in the Journey Trilogy by Aaron Becker [Books #1 and #2 Giveaway]

In honor of Book #3 in the Journey Trilogy by Aaron Becker, the good folks at Candlewick Press have graciously provided books #1 and #2 in the series for a giveaway here on Chat With Vera. Now about the two books in the giveaway, here is a bit about each of them.....

JOURNEY - A 2014 Caldecott Honor Book

Follow a girl on an elaborate flight of fancy in a wondrously illustrated, wordless picture book about self-determination — and unexpected friendship.

A lonely girl draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and through it escapes into a world where wonder, adventure, and danger abound. Red marker in hand, she creates a boat, a balloon, and a flying carpet that carry her on a spectacular journey toward an uncertain destiny. When she is captured by a sinister emperor, only an act of tremendous courage and kindness can set her free. Can it also lead her home and to her heart’s desire? With supple line, luminous color, and nimble flights of fancy, author-illustrator Aaron Becker launches an ordinary child on an extraordinary journey toward her greatest and most exciting adventure of all.

QUEST - Aaron Becker, creator of Journey, a Caldecott Honor book, presents the next chapter in his stunning wordless fantasy.

A king emerges from a hidden door in a city park, startling two children sheltering from the rain. No sooner does he push a map and some strange objects into their hands than he is captured by hostile forces that whisk him back through the enchanted door. Just like that, the children are caught up in a quest to rescue the king and his kingdom from darkness, while illuminating the farthest reaches of their imagination. Colored markers in hand, they make their own way through the portal, under the sea, through a tropical paradise, over a perilous bridge, and high in the air with the help of a winged friend. Journey lovers will be thrilled to follow its characters on a new adventure threaded with familiar elements, while new fans will be swept into a visually captivating story that is even richer and more exhilarating than the first.

Zacchaeus and Jesus (Flipside Stories) by Dandi Daley Mackall, Lisa Manuzak

One of the first things I expect out of a children's Bible storybook is authenticity. I simply can not condone treating the Bible with anything less than truthful presentation and authenticity. I also believe that some leeway is allowed in the art so that it can be appealing to the child.

In this "Flipside Stories book" the author has accurately portrayed the story of Zacchaeus as he struggled to see Jesus and how Jesus reacted to that particular event. Quite unique for a children's book.

The coloration of the illustrations is deep hues of browns, greens, and blacks with white sparsely utilized. While not your typical color scheme for children's picture books, it works well in this story.

The story is in rhyme and I simply can't say enough about the importance of using rhyme to engage a child's attention and to aid in recollection of the story itself. Super!

This story, though, has a special line on each page that is especially appealing to me. Example: On the Jesus side of the story, the single lines of text carry the theme of Jesus came for lost sinners.
"God sent Me to those who were lost."
"I was looking for those who were lost."
"Zacchaeus, the one who was lost.".......
"I think that I'd like to see Jesus."
"I must find a way to see Jesus."
"I climb down so I can meet Jesus."
So to me, while the story is being taught in delightful rhyme with engaging illustrations, the key is God seeks the lost and the lost need to seek to see Jesus.

A really good opportunity to share this story and these truths with children ages preschool through eight.

Missing by Lisa Harris (The Nikki Boyd Files)

My thoughts: As the sequel to Lisa Harris' Vendetta, the story in Missing easily captures the reader's attention and compels binge reading.

Nikki Boyd returns to solve another missing person's case when homicide discovers that the scene of the crime they are investigating actually involves a missing teacher and her husband. They call in Special Agent Boyd.

The plot engages Nikki's long-term friend, Tyler Grant, and his father-in-law. As Nikki follows clues to find the missing persons, action involving more murders, boats being bombed, and healing drugs actually causing death.

Nikki is personally involved in trying to find her missing sister, Sarah, and references to this ongoing situation are sprinkled through Missing. I really hoped that the author would have Nikki find resolution to this personal drama in Missing, but that seems to await future revelations.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Missing and anticipate future stories from the author.

About the book: Nikki Boyd Enters the Deadly World of Counterfeit Drugs to Find a Missing Woman

Nikki Boyd isn't usually called in on homicides; her forte is missing persons. But when a case with two murdered and two missing pops up on a quiet suburban street, she's ready to start the investigation and find missing homeowners Mac and Lucy Hudson. When the first clues lead her to the boat of her friend Tyler Grant--and another dead body--Nikki must untangle what ties Tyler to the Hudsons. The clues pull her into a deadly maze of counterfeit drugs and a killer who will stop at nothing to silence anyone who threatens his business--including Nikki.

Christy Award-winning and bestselling author Lisa Harris puts readers right into the action in this fast-paced thriller that will have them turning pages long into the night.

If You Were Me and Lived in...Renaissance Italy (An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time) (Volume 2) by Carole P. Roman, Silvia Brunetti-Illustrator [Review & Giveaway]

ISBN13: 9781523234271
My thoughts: So much happened during the Renaissance and, author Carole P. Roman writes interestingly of much of those exciting years. It was a time of reawakening. People began to exchange ideas, to explore the arts, and to craft amazingly beautiful and realistic art. People began to develop a merchant or middle class which was the result of new ideas, new business ventures abroad, and money making opportunities. Italy was very much a center for the re-awakening and life began to flourish.

As Ms. Roman tells the story of these developments, the reader can place himself right at the center. He or she will learn that the education was vastly different for boys and girls and was given to them by a tutor. Lower classes were uneducated.

I especially like the text on page 8, "A new age was coming. You wouldn't know this time period would be called a special name and it was about to change the entire world. It was going to be called the Renaissance and means rebirth in French. People looked back and rediscovered the teachings of Ancient Greece and Rome."  And then, "The Renaissance was the reawakening of human creatively after a darker time period."

You see, the Renaissance followed the "dark ages" which is another story to tell sometime. The timeline for the Renaissance Italy was 1330 to 1550 AD *Reference

Life for a child in Renaissance Italy was filled with activity. There was work and there was fun. Ms. Roman shares much of this with the reader.

I especially like the sections in the back of the book. There are explanations and pictures of some of the great art of the period - sculpture and paintings. Then there is a really nice section with pictures and short biographies of famous and important people during the period. And lastly, the wonderful glossary.

The illustrations of Silvia Brunetti show life styles, clothes, furnishings, and architecture. The people in the illustrations are bright eyed and have a certain charm.

This is an excellent resource for the home or classroom library. More sturdily bound editions would be wonderful in children's school libraries and the children's section of public libraries. While ideal for the elementary age child, even preschoolers will find it interesting.

About the book: Join Carole P. Roman and travel through time to visit the most interesting civilizations throughout history in the first four books of her new series. Learn what kind of food you might eat in Ancient Greece, the clothes you wore in 15th century Renaissance Italy, what your name could be in Elizabethan England, and what Colonial American children did for fun. If You Were Me and Lived in...does for history what her other award-winning series did for culture. So get on-board this time-travel machine and discover the world through the eyes of a young person just like you. . Two great question/answer worksheets to make the book even more productive.

If You Were Me and Lived in...Ancient Greece (An Introduction to Civilizations Throughout Time) (Volume 1) by Carole P. Roman [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: History was always my favorite subject to study while in school and then through the years, I have literally consumed as much of our world's history as possible. So when I saw that Carole P. Roman was embarking on a new series of children's books about life in the historical world, I was simply delighted.

Ancient Greece encompasses life prior to the birth of Christ. Life in ancient Greece was from 338-776 BC or approximately 400 years of world-stage domination during which they contributed much to the life of civilized man earning the title "The Cradle of Western Civilization."

Ms. Roman has her book framed around 2300 years ago, or 300 BC bringing the story directly to the child by engaging them in imagining what their name or their sister's name would be like, if they lived then. She goes on to explain a bit about Greece's form of government and their worship of many gods. There were many slaves in Greece and if they could garner enough money, they could purchase their freedom.

I found the tidbits about the gods interesting, especially the god of the hearth. Every home had a fire pit and the embers were never allowed to extinguish. The same was true of the village fire pit. Also, when a new village was established, embers were carried from an existing to the new village. This was in honor of the god Hestia.

There is a lot of information in Ms. Roman's Ancient Greece which will serve as a good introduction to world history. It is interestingly written so it won't bore the child, yet gives a wide range of basic information about the time and country. At the end of the book there is a very nice glossary that will be great for reference. This new series of books is a bit longer than the author's earlier publications and this allows for more indepth information and a richer experience.

The illustrations of If You Were Me and Lived In Ancient Greece are done in very soft pastels with soft definition. The light hearted theme of illustrations is nicely suited for the young reader.

This will be a great read-aloud book or for the more advanced reader to dive into. It is hard to put an age on this one, because it can span a wide age range. Kids will enjoy learning about Ancient Greece in this interesting, non-boring book. I would classify this as non-fiction because of the plethora of information it contains. However, there is a fictional base to it as it places the child reading the book in the story...... "If YOU were ME and Lived in......"

Great for classrooms or home libraries. Sturdier binding would make this a favorite in children's sections of school and public libraries.

Two great question/answer worksheets to make the book even more productive.

Nostalgic look at books from years past: Flicka, Ricka and Dicka Go To Market by Maj Lindman [Review & Giveaway]

My thoughts: I saw Flicka, Ricka, Dicka Go to Market and immediately my mind took a stroll down memory lane. I'm a child of the 1940s - yes, I realize that is a bit telling, but then let's be honest about it. That was a fantastic time to grow up. The 1940s and 1950s saw the end of WWII, the Korean War, a simpler life style, a safer world to live in, and kids could roam the neighborhood without fear.

The series of Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka began in the 1940s in Sweden and this particular copy of when they Go to Market has been republished by Albert Whitman & Company in 1958. The story was originally published in 1946. Whitman's is selling this new printing of the 1958 edition - see it at their website - click here. In fact, they have several of the stories in print.

The illustrations are charming, happy, colorful, and lively. Clearly a style that was used by many illustrators during the 1940s and 1950s.  Originating in Sweden, the triplets have blue eyes and blond hair which is typical of that country's population. And while the original story is from Sweden, the illustrations and story are timeless and would fit in many countries. This edition definitely has a vintage look true to the original.

The story revolves around the girls wanting a bicycle and they need the money to get one. Keep in mind, that bikes were an exception and a costly item for most families during this time frame. And many families would have the child earn the money to purchase it or to help purchase it.

Nicely flowing text tells the story of the girls as they take on a project of gardening and then selling their produce at market in order to acquire their bicycle. A super story and a great re-introduction into children's story time.

Special to this book: In the back is a pocket with two sheets of paper dolls. One sheet has each of the triplets and the other has a change of clothes for them. Paper dolls were a treat during the 1920s-1960s. Sadly, this simple play item has become largely passé.

About the book: Flicka, Ricka and Dicka are three sisters who live in Sweden. The have blond hair and blue eyes and look very much alike. After the family moves to the country, the girls realize they need bicycles to ride to school. To earn the money, they decide to plant vegetables to sell at the market. They work hard choosing seeds, planting, weeding, watering, and selling too many vegetables to think about themselves! This edition also includes paper dolls of Flicka, Ricka and Dicka!

[Review & Giveaway] "Murder Mezzo Forte" (Lamplighter Mysteries) by Donn Taylor

My thoughts: Somehow I've missed out on opportunities to read former books by Donn Taylor and much to my disappointment. He writes with a high level of intelligent sarcasm, great wit, and skill that one rarely encounters. His talent at wordsmithing is excellent. With a PhD in Literature, University teaching experience, and utilizing his varied life experiences, he has penned a delightful read.

The main protagonist, Preston Barclay, is a professor of history at Overton College, now Overton University. The world of academia is unsettled by the newly discovered death of a professor. And who discovers the body? Professor Preston Barclay and his side-kick, Professor Mara Thorn, of course. They who in the previous book had locked minds to find another killer on Overton's campus.

The story is a lot of fun to read and the characters well developed. The mystery's solution was kept pretty much under wraps until the last bit of the book. And then it all fell in place.

I think the biggest hit of the book, for me, was the sense of humor Preston Barclay has and how he is twisting words and rattling off puns right and left. Of course, it is all due to the wonderful talent the author, Donn Taylor has as he unleashes his bright mind and shapes the 26 letters of the alphabet into a smattering of words that delight the reader.

About the book: He is a reclusive history professor with musical hallucinations, she a headstrong professor of religion, a converted Wiccan. Earlier, they solved a campus murder, but now police say they formed two-thirds of an illicit love triangle with a newly-murdered female colleague and they're probably guilty of her murder. A leak of the alleged scandal to the college administration threatens their jobs. Their desperate attempt to prove themselves innocent of the triangle and the murder plunges them into a tangle of unsavory corporate relationships among college trustees. And it puts their lives in danger from a mysterious criminal organization that seems to have tentacles everywhere.

Can this ill-matched pair's stumbling efforts succeed against the entrenched forces of the police, the college's incompetent administration, and that powerful but unseen criminal organization? If not, they may end up unemployed, in prison, or suffering a fate much worse . . . . .

Please Be Nice to Sharks: Fascinating Facts about the Ocean’s Most Misunderstood Creatures by Matthew Weiss [Review & Giveaway - open USA/CANADA]

ISBN: 9781454917489
Sterling Children's Books

Summer time is here! Time to splash and swim in the great ocean waters is here! And time to be aware of some of the most awesome creatures on the planet - Sharks. Shark week 2016 is officially beginning Sunday June 26th. But let's begin a countdown now learning about these JAWsome creatures. Then watch everywhere beginning June 26th for more JAWsome information

Sterling Publishing (Sterling Children's Books) has a book  that hit the shelves in early June 2016 that is beautifully illustrated showing these JAWsome creatures. Matt Weiss is using his wonderful talent to bring us fascinating facts about the Ocean's Most Misunderstood Creatures.

Now let's dive deep to see just why we should Be Nice To Sharks

Typically we think of sharks as these stealthy grey & white monsters with horrendous teeth that lurk in the waters preying on people. But as the author points out that it isn't true (p. 3) and that they are being over-fished for collecting fins and for sport. Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy and 70 million sharks killed yearly for this food. Weiss reports that almost all the sharks in the oceans are gone and they could become extinct.
Some say, "Good riddance. They are dangerous." But consideration needs to be given to the fact that sharks are like the caretakers of the oceans and the waters cover almost three-quarters of Earth's surface. WOW!

Reading Please Be Nice to Sharks: Fascinating Facts about the Ocean's Most Misunderstood Creatures will open the reader's eyes, mind, and hearts to considering the caretakers of the ocean. The text is in the first person as though each type of shark is speaking to the reading and sharing a bit about themselves. The tone is light-hearted as if the shark is saying, "Hey look, I'm not a bad guy after all."

So as you swim in the oceans, be alert and if you see fins, maybe you should get out because the sharks are doing just what they are made to do - roaming the oceans, being its caretaker, and looking for food.

As you visit the various aquariums across the world, look at these magnificent creatures and be amazed; be thankful that they were created and that they roam the oceans.

At the end of the book, there is a great index so you can find the specific sharks, pages about attacks, about the food chain, and other delightful stuff.

About the book: Meet 14 cool sharks (and one manta ray) and see why it's important to BE NICE TO SHARKS! Though they’re often portrayed as vicious man-eaters, sharks actually kill fewer than 10 people per year. Yet those myths cause real harm: many species are being hunted to extinction, with as many as 100-200 million sharks being killed each year.

Enhance your child's reading skills by Gloria G. Adams, co-author of Ah-Choo! by Lana Wayne Koehler and Gloria G. Adams [Review & Giveaway]

Enhance your child’s reading skills

Every time you can enhance your child’s reading skills, it’s a step toward raising a better reader. And good readers have a greater chance to succeed in school. One positive and effective tool to use is a book in rhyme.

As a children’s librarian, I spent many hours reading books in rhyme to young children in Story Hour. I had several reasons for doing so:
  1. They’re fun! And if kids have fun listening to a book, they’ll want to hear it over and over.
  2. They keep kids engaged, especially if they have a repetitive refrain or word (like Ah-Choo!
  3. They teach a valuable pre-reading skill, phonemic awareness. It helps kids break words down into smaller parts.
  4. You can turn most of them into songs! Have you ever sung a book? Try putting the rhyming verses of Ah-Choo! to music.
  5. Did I mention that they’re fun?
According to one educator, “Books that rhyme are not only fun for parents to read aloud, they are enjoyable to listen to, they offer wonderful exposure to unique language and they provide an opportunity for children to begin reading on their own. Repetition and rhyme give way to rhythm, recognition and memorization-all of which can have a huge impact on children learning to read.”
You can use Ah-Choo! in different ways to help your child practice rhyming even more.
  • Find all the words in the book that rhyme with Ah-Choo.
  • Search for other words that rhyme, such as “hen” and “then” or “Jack” and “back.”
  • Have your child choose a name for an animal, then think of a rhyming name. For example, maybe your child names the cat “Sammy.” Other names that rhyme with Sammy are Hammy, Jammy, Lammy, etc. There are more than 26 animals in Ah-Choo, so there are almost endless opportunities for practicing rhyme with your child.
Of course, the very best way to use Ah-Choo! to enhance reading skills is to cuddle with your children and read it out loud to them. Chances are, they’ll want to hear it again, and again, and again…

My thoughts about "Ah-Choo!": Rhyming text that rollicks and frolics along on the tip of the reader's tongue is always a sure-fire win in children's books. Factor in delightful illustrations that burst in bright colors from the page and fit perfectly with the text and you have a true win-win picture book.

This is a read-aloud delight. Such an assortment of critters that this little boy tries for pets and all cause his sister to sneeze. This cute book teaches several things..... desire for a pet, pets that won't work out in a household - what to do with them, perseverance to find a solution to a problem, consideration for others. Well, you get the idea. The book is simply abloom with subtle teachable moments.

But it is also simply a fun book to read aloud one-on-one or in a classroom. Interaction from the ones being read to could be the repeated Ah-Choo! that results when animals are introduced.

About the book: When hunting for his new best friend, a boy goes through an alphabetical menagerie of animals. From an antelope, to bobolink birds, to wolves and zebras—and of course, a cat and dog, too—he brings them all home. But each creature just makes his sister go AH-CHOO! Will he ever be able to have the perfect pet?

Beautifully illustrated and brimming with silly scenes that will have young readers in hysterics, this sensitive look at the difficulties children go through when suffering from allergies can help begin conversations at home about compromise.

Lighting the outside darkness: Internova Yeti 800 Monster LED Camping and Emergency Lantern - Massive Brightness with Tri-Strip Light Available

Before even opening the package, I was intrigued.  “Yeti” was emblazoned on the side of the box. Many things have been associated with the mythical beast, who are primarily known for their toughness and legendary status.  This lamp is no exception.
As the name suggests this “Monster” lantern puts out an enormous amount of light.  To this date, I have not experienced its equal in area illumination.  The ability to light up a campsite or fishing spot makes it the perfect tool for any outdoor enthusiast, especially ones who will be spending long nights away from civilization.

Although made from plastic, the lamp seems sturdy enough, especially with the rubber seals and bumpers for maximum toughness and water resistance.  I greatly anticipate further use of this lamp in the field.
